March is Women's History Month. This month we will feature 100 photos of Oxford's women through history. Our first photo shows Agnes Prokop holding her little dog, while standing in front of the original Prokop farmhouse on Prokop Road, near what is now the Oxford Airport. Agnes married Edward Oczkowski, who was Oxford First Selectman in the 1990's. Our second photo shows Elizabeth Bronson Rowland, the wife of Philip Rowland, who purchased the Joseph Twitchell Homestead, located opposite the terminus of Towner Lane on Christian Street in 1902. The house was moved to its present site at 60 Towner Lane and today serves as the Oxford Historical Society's headquarters and museum, thanks to a gift of land from the Rowland family. (Photo Courtesy of Fred and Myrtle Rowland.) Our third photo shows Domenica DeMaio (left), known to her friends as May. She and her husband, James, he former owners of the Oxford House. They volunteered to be the 24-hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week dispatchers for the Oxford Ambulance Association. They started their duties when it began in 1954, and May served for 21 years until she retired in 1975. Her dedication to the town made her a legend in her own time. (Courtesy of Sue Pettinelli) Oxford families often enjoyed a trip to Savin Rock, an amusement park in West Haven. Our fourth photo shows a young lady poseing for her photograph with the Man in the Moon. The style of her dress was often found in the early 1900's.
