March is Women's History Month. This month we will feature 100 photos of Oxford's women through history. Today's first photo shows Louise Nyberg, now Historical Society President Louise Burr, holding her sister Jessie at home on Jack's HIll Road. August 1950 Cat Penny rests in the foreground. The second phohto shows Theresa Hoyt, dressed in Colonial style clothing, hosting the Oxford Historical Society table at Oxford's 1776 Old Tyme Fair, as the town celebrated the American Bicentennial. Ann Ludgwait treasures today's third photograph of her mother, Elsie, who was born, Sept. 23, 1899. She married John J. Hunihan on June 28, 1927. Together they had three children. John (Jr.), Ann and David. They lived at 297 Loughin Rad, the home where John grew up. Elsie, having lost her husband when their youngest child was six, she raised her family with dedication and hard work. She was known for her cooking skills, including her delicious pies and homemade rolls, gardening and her love for her children. Elsie died January 27, 1989 at the age of 89. Today's photograph shows Elizabeth Rowland with her son, Edward Philip Rowland soon after the family purchased the farm on Christian Street. The house has been moved to 60 Towner Lane and serves as the Historical Society musuem and headquarters.
