March is Women's History Month. This month we will feature 100 photos of Oxford's women through history. Today's photos include a 1910 photo of all the teachers from the various Oxford one and two-room schoolhouses, a photo of ladies waiting at the Towantic Railroad Station and a farmer's milk delivery wagon. The picture of teachers in the 1910 photo in front of Shrub Oak School (later site of Church School) shows 16 ladies and one gentleman. Individual teachers are not identified on the photo, but the 1908 Town Report lists fourteen teachers' names. (Oxford Historical Society photo, gift of Mrs. Edward Dains.) Oxford's railroad station (above) in the Towantic Hill area north of Riggs Street was called Towantic Station. Note the telegraph pole in the rear -- there was a line of these poles that stretched across Oxford to reach the railroad station. (Photo from Oxford Historical Society Collection.) Dairy farmer Peter Popowski delivered his milk in 40-quart milk cans by horse and wagon to the Stevenson Bridge pickup station. The milk cans from a variety of farmers were picked up by the dairy at this central point. The picture shows Barbara Jean Saad in Popowski's wagon. Popowski in seen behind the horse.
